The Need to Change a Support Order: If a parent has substantially increased or decreased his or her income, this may call for an increase or decrease in child support.

The Need to Change a Custody Order: If a custodial parent needs to change the custody arrangement (custody modification) because he or she has gotten a better paying job that does not allow for as much time with the child, the custody order may be changed. The order can also be changed if the custodial parent is seeking a parental relocation or a child move-away for a compelling reason. Another reason to change a custody order is if the child is being abused in some way by either parent.

Address Your Concerns Right Away

It can be difficult for some people to return to issues that caused them such heartache in the past. However, if a modification is not lawfully sought, the consequences can be serious. For instance, moving away from the state without the agreement of your former spouse can result in you losing custody of your child or worse. If you do not have the money to pay support, you are still accountable for support — until you seek relief from the court. A person can be jailed for not paying child support.
